My kids love holiday celebrations! Well, so do I – it is so nice to have something to look forward to all the time; even if it is something as silly as Rubber Eraser Day (April 15th).
September is full of lots of things to celebrate such as National Grandparents Day (September 9th), International Chocolate Day (September 13th), or Talk Like a Pirate Day (September 19th). But there is also another day which we do not celebrate but rather honor those involved. It is Patriot Day – September 11, 2001, the day of the terrorist attacks on America.
Now this is a serious subject so I considered not using it as one of the CLIPs but then I realized that there might be people out there who will not discuss topics like this with their children. So to honor the victims and the families of 9/11, I have prepared a CLIP to allow families resources and activities right at their fingertips.
The first resource listed on the CLIP is a video from BrainPop UK explaining what happened on September 11, 2001. It also explains terms like terrorism and Al-Qaeda. It is in cartoon form so it appeals to kids and shares on their level. Please watch the video with your child(ren) so that you can explain things to them and be there for support. My children actually came up and watched with me as I viewed the video for this post. The video is very informative without trying to strike fear. While we watched the video the mood was somber and almost reverent – the children really grasped the severity of the message and it prompted additional questions which was a great opportunity for a discussion (and it was their idea!!)

Here is an activity that we plan to do so that we have something special to display on 9/11. Also, check out our pinterest board to find some additional resources and activities.

Great resources. Thank you for sharing. It is a sober and prayerful day for us. I am glad you decided to share – when we stop talking about September 11th, that is the day we begin to forget.
Very true! I think it is important to inform children and to remind ourselves just how blessed we are to live in America!
